Lupita’s dress. Lupita’s elegance. Lupita everything. Even though the 12 Years a Slave actress was snubbed last year (she was nominated for Best Actress), she managed to steal the show. Slaying the red carpet in a crimson dress, the decision was easy: Lupita was easily the best dressed nominee at last year’s ceremony.
He paved the way for Black Hollywood. In 1959, Sidney Poitier became the first Black actor to be nominated for a Golden Globe, and in 1964, he snagged the Best Actor award for Lilies of the Field.
Believe it or not, it took until 1986 before a Black woman won a Golden Globe. That title went to Whoopi Goldberg for her portrayal of a character we all know and love: Celie in The Color Purple. She took home the Best Actress award, and her victory is forever immortalized in our minds, partially thanks to her, um, memorable outfit.
Actors always talk about how they feel that they don’t deserve their win, but in 1998, Ving Rhames wasn’t playing. After he won Best Actor in a TV miniseries for Don King: Only in America, he graced the stage and announced that fellow nominee Jack Lemmon for his role in 12 Angry Men deserved the award more. The shocking part? He actually followed through, giving Lemmon his award and refusing to take it back.
