Amanda Seales is disappointed in Gladys Knight’s decision to perform at the Super Bowl, but the comedian has a solution.
Seales, who is set to make her HBO stand-up comedy on Saturday in I Be Knowin’, told ABC Radio that Knight should instead sing her own rendition of the Black national anthem, “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing.”
“Listen, I say all that to say [that] if they each go out there and do their own rendition of ‘Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing’….Hey, listen, I stand corrected!” she quipped.
It was recently confirmed that Knight will sing the National Anthem, while Maroon 5, Travis Scott and Big Boi will perform during the Super Bowl halftime show.
Knight has defended her decision to perform during the big game on February 3, saying she wants to give the anthem its voice back.
“Sis, ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ was written by a racist and it has racist lyrics in it,” Seales said. “So, even if you’re not singing those [specific lyrics], you’re singing a song that contains them. You cannot give it back a power it never should have had in the first place.”
