From the looks of things, everyone would think Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade have the most fantastic, romantic, beautiful relationship ever. However, Wade revealed to Jay Leno on Friday that things weren’t always so perfect between him and his lady. In fact, there was a time when they needed to “step back.”
“A celebrity relationship is very hard,” said Wade after gushing over his two sons. “This was a big year for us in our relationship from the standpoint of she was shooting her show Being Mary Jane… I was dealing with my injuries, trying to win a championship.”
Wade said they had to think hard about their relationship before deciding to move forward. “We kind of took a step back,” he said. “We supported each other, but we took a step back for a little while. At the end of day, we came back together and said, ‘Listen, we want to continue this. We want to try to continue to get better each day.’ She’s been with me and I’ve been with her all summer long. We’re going strong now.”
This weekend, the two were spotted frolicking on the beach in Malibu, California. The upcoming seasons will be busy for them both—Union’s new show Being Mary Jane will debut on BET in January and Think Like a Man Too is expected to hit theaters in the spring. For Wade, the upcoming 2013-2014 NBA season will begin at the end of October.
