What is there not to love about Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade‘s love story? They’ve been open about the ups and downs on their journey, from breakups to makeups, to heartbreak and fertility issues. But in the end, the pair have managed to only get better, appearing more in love, more unified, and more carefree than when they started way back in 2009, 2010. To see how their story began and how it’s unfolded over the years, take a look below!
The basketball star was awarded sole care, custody and control of his sons, Zaire and Zion from his first marriage with her ex-wife Siovaughn Funches. Wade also raises his nephew, Dahveon. Their blended family is something the actress guards preciously and often speaks highly of the three Black boys she helps to raise.
With time and distance keeping them apart, the two took a break from their relationship but allegedly reunited in April of that year. The actress spoke out after they got back together that the space was necessary to make their relationship stronger.
“It was because of distance and scheduling,” the Being Mary Jane star told Glamour. “I finished filming the show, then I flew to Vegas right away to start shooting ‘Think Like a Man Too.’ I couldn’t take time off, and I missed some quality togetherness we desperately needed.”
The 44-year-old and the Chicago Bulls star tied the knot in a lavish Miami ceremony in front of family and friends, which included Being Mary Jane co-creators Mara Brock Akil and her husband Salim Akil, Ludacris and his wife Eudoxie, Kevin and Eniko Hart and Wade’s former Miami Heat teammate, Chris Bosh and his wife Adrienne.
Just weeks later, news broke that the actress sufferend “eight or nine miscarriages” while trying to start a family with her husband. The star revealed in her memoir, We’re Going to Need More Wine, that until becoming a stepmom, motherhood wasn’t a high priority. In revealing this emotional truth, Dwyane supported his wife calling her, “one strong individual.”
