Everyone loves a good love story, and this week on ESSENCE’s “Yes, Girl” podcast, Senior Digital Love and Relationships editor Charli Penn gets to know one of Hollywood’s adorably low-key couples a little better. Star of new truTV comedy series Upscale With Prentice Penny and Insecure showrunner, Prentice Penny, and his wife of 13 years, attorney Tasha Penny are an LA power couple making waves and juggling love, success and family like pros.
The Pennys are college sweethearts who made it work and weren’t afraid to keep it real about how falling in love is easy but staying in love takes hard work and devotion. The couple sat down to spill the real on what brought them together, how their marriage works and the best love advice they’ve ever received. The full interview has all of the gems (and laughs) but in the meantime, here are three reasons we can’t stop blushing about their love story.
1. They met as members of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. just moments before their moms planned to hook them up.
The future lovebirds locked eyes at a Teen Conference and Prentice says he just knew that Tasha was someone special. (Aww!) Proving that this love was so clearly meant to be, just at they were sharing a first encounter, their mothers were across the room plotting to introduce them before the conference ended. Prentice also revealed that Tasha’s smile wasn’t the only amazing thing about her that caught his eye the moment that they first met, but you’ll have to listen to the podcast to find out what else stopped him in his tracks.
2. At one point they just couldn’t make it work, but fate had other plans.
During some relationships, there comes a point where you and your partner just aren’t on the same page and staying together seems hard, if not impossible, to do. For Prentice and Tasha, things became tough to maintain when he was living and working in L.A. and she was in law school in D.C. They were going through the woes of life-work balance and trying to some space for love. We feel that. To find out how they weathered the storm, listen to their he said/she said versions in the chat above.
3. Their big on family, fun and love.
After tying the knot 13 years ago, the Mr. and Mrs. are the proud parents to three beautiful babies — a son who will turn 10 soon and a set of twins who are 7. How cute?!
