The company you keep is an essential part of life. Friends can build you up, be the people you turn to during tough times, and the ride or die family you need when things get real.
For Black Panther‘s Letitia Wright it’s key that the people in her inner circle have “good vibes.” Speaking with ESSENCE’s editorial director Yolanda Sangweni, senior love and relationships editor Charli Penn, and entertainment director Cori Murray for Yes, Girl!, Wright shared how she figures out who to keep in her circle.
“It’s praying for the spirit of discernment,” she tells Yes, Girl! “The Bible speaks about that, just discerning of spirits and knowing that whoever is meant to be in your life will be in your life. My circle is filled with majority Christians and non-believers too, but still good vibes.”
The breakout star of Marvel’s hit film is candid about her faith, explaining that it’s her relationship with God that helped during a rough time in her life. “The light that’s in me now and the joy and the happiness that I feel, I didn’t get it on my own. It’s God working through me.”
Wright says she sees what people show her as a sign of how they will treat you, explaining that even the people on her team, from her publicist to hair stylist, have her back.
“I truly believe that’s a prayer that you have to keep praying” she adds. “Not only your close friends but also your team. You’ll know them by their fruits. I think that’s the easiest thing to determine because how someone is and what someone shows to you will be a sign, a habit. If the friendship’s not meant for you, then you have to let it go.”
