For years, singer Brandy has endured years of speculation and criticism about her body. This week she’s saying enough.
The legendary songstress has been consistently hounded with pregnancy rumors. On Thursday, in an interview from True Exclusives, she explained that she’s just been living her best life, and enjoying some great food.
“I didn’t think the pregnancy thing was body-shaming,” she said of the speculation. “I didn’t feel that from people who obviously saw that I put on weight and thought I was pregnant.”
She added: “I went on a foodcation because I’d been eating clean for like seven-something odd years, in the gym, every day, playing tennis. I’m like, ‘Yo, I’m tired of this crazy discipline. I need something to eat! I want some pizza, I want some pasta, I want some cake! I want something other than salmon, broccoli and asparagus.’”
She has denied being pregnant multiple times in the last year, calling herself “thicker than a snicker” in an Instagram post last year. And if she did have a baby, the child would already be 2.5 years old today, she says.
Brandy also says that she wouldn’t lie about a pregnancy today like she felt she had to when she had her daughter Sy’rai in 2002. The “Full Moon” singer felt she had to lie that she was married at the time.
“I fibbed about being married because I wanted to have my baby,” she says. “I thought if I didn’t say I was married…I didn’t want to lose my fans. I didn’t want to disappoint anybody. Which is why I said I didn’t want to go down the aisle just to go down the aisle because I’m pregnant. I want(ed) to be ready to do that, so let’s just say that I’m married — which was the wrong thing to do.”
She also explained that at the time of her pregnancy she was younger and thought having a child without a wedding ring would interfere with her career.
“I was pregnant out of wedlock then, if I were out of wedlock now — why would I be ashamed of a baby? It’s funny how people are telling ME that I’m pregnant.”
Brandy also shared that she is currently working on new music.
