Over the years, the family values of the Braxton sisters — Toni, Traci, Towanda, Trina, and Tamar — and their respective relationships have been well-documented on their WEtv reality series.
Just one month shy of she and husband Vincent Herbert’s nine-year wedding anniversary last fall, Tamar filed for divorce. For some regular viewers of the hit show, their split was a bit of a surprise.
In this ESSENCE Now interview, three of the Braxton sisters discuss Tamar’s relationship with Vince and how the potential end of their marriage affects the professional relationship the family has with their estranged brother-in-law.
“We don’t really have a relationship with Vince right now. We’re just trying to deal with it every day, day by day,” said Towanda. “We don’t actually know if they’re getting a divorce. Some days we [are] like, ‘are they getting a divorce?’ Some days we [are] like ‘are they not getting a divorce?’ So we basically mind our business now when it comes to those two because you never know…We let her address [the divorce] because we’re always going to be in the wrong, I don’t even feel like playing that game, we’re too grown for that game.”
In November 2017, the Braxton family matriarch, Evelyn, spoke to TMZ stating she wanted Herbert to “keep his hands off [her] daughter.” While both the Grammy-nominated singer and her estranged husband refuted any allegations of domestic abuse, the sisters say the relationship between the pair was always a rocky one.
When speaking about the physical abuse allegations Towanda said, “They have a very tumultuous relationship, always. It’s on and off, off and on. We’ve witnessed a lot of things as sisters if you can imagine so we’ve been holding back and not saying anything for years.”
