Ciara and ex-Future began their relationship making beautiful music together, but somewhere between their engagement, the birth of their son, Future Zahir, and planning their wedding, everything seemed to fall apart.
Since their very public split in August 2014, Ciara has moved on in a big way: She found happiness with new love NFL star Russell Wilson, and after accepting his grand proposal in the Maldives, the two married in a fairytale affair to remember in the summer of 2016. While the singer may have put her best foot forward in her new life with Wilson, her legal battles with Future linger on.
The exes’ court drama continues to dominate news headlines month after month leaving some fans with one burning question: what exactly are they fighting over? We break it all down beginning with the moment their relationship turned sour and ending with where things stand between them now.
August 2014: The couple calls off their engagement after just 14 months of dating. Ouch.
September 2014: Baby Future’s parents reconcile, for his sake, but the reunion is short-lived and they breakup shortly afterward.

January 2015: Ciara releases breakup anthem “I Bet,” which is said to address ex Future’s alleged cheating. The lyrics from the single, from her fifth studio album Jackie, were interpreted by many to be the ultimate farwell to their failed relationship. “I bet you start loving me as soon as I start loving someone else / Somebody better than you / I bet you start needing me as soon as you see me with someone else / Somebody other than you / And I know that it hurts / You know that it hurts your pride / But you thought the grass was greener on the other side,” she sang.
July 2015: Ciara fires shots at Future’s parenting during interviews and on Twitter. “Some Person Is So Dishonest and Ignorant That They Don’t Deserve A Response,” and “Furthermore, One’s Main Focus Should Be On Being A Good Parent,” she tweeted following Future’s discussion about the failure of their relationship.
August 2015: Future reportedly refused to speak to Ciara about meeting Russell Wilson. In April, the singer attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner arm-in-arm with the Seattle Seahawks quarterback. They announced they were dating shortly thereafter and reports say Future was still not receptive to meeting with Wilson about baby Future.
