Knowing our purpose, helps us to make the daily decisions of where we will and won’t spend our TIME. Coach Felicia shares her quick strategies for experiencing transformation.
I was recently a keynote speaker at the Pi Pi Omega chapter Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority event, which honored organizations making a difference in the community and the theme was, “Blacks In Action 2015: Celebrating Those Who Inspire.”
It is important to be inspired, but inspiration can be a waning emotion that is as fickle as the tide. The thing we all want most in our lives is transformation. But how does that happen? How do we go from where we are now to the future we want? The answer is simple: take action!
But just doing something is not enough. Many of us are busy taking actions that don’t have an impact on moving us towards our dreams! Our calendars are so full that we barely have room to breathe—but life is still lacking and our hearts still hunger for something more. The problem is that we are doing without purpose!
Purpose simply means that we are all a solution to a problem. Our gifts, our talents and our passions are meant to serve us in being that solution. So, the most important question we must ask ourselves every day is, “Why am I here?”
Knowing our purpose, helps us to make the daily decisions of where we will and won’t spend our TIME. Here are some quick strategies to help you experience transformation:
T – Talent: All of us excel at something! Some may have easily evident skills such as the ability to sing, speak or write. Some may be extremely gifted at listening, thinking strategically or leading. Your talents differentiate you even without you trying to showcase them. Once we discover our talents, we must devote time to cultivating and perfecting them.
I – Integrity: Talent is readily celebrated, but character is often overlooked. Yet, lack of character poses the greatest threat to any influence, gain or credit that our talent can attract. We must strive to be people of integrity and consistency—meaning that our “do and say” is one. When we fall short in this area, it’s critical that we’re honest about our shortcomings. Sometimes our mistakes are what qualify us to handle certain responsibilities. But, we can’t grow from them, if we aren’t honest.
M – Mind: Sometimes when I misbehaved as a kid, my father would tell me, “You better get your mind right!” Our actions follow the course of our thinking patterns. Therefore it is key to examine our thoughts on a regular basis. We need to think about what we’re thinking about. Not only that, we must recognize the impact of our environment on our thinking. Be diligent about creating an environment for your mind to grow!
E – Energy: We need to make sure that our time and energy is spent in alignment with our purpose. Time should be viewed like money. Spending time in futile activities and/or people is the same as dropping money in the streets. Time must be invested, because investments in the right accounts can yield exponentially beneficial results.
Do Your Work! Audit your time for the next three days. Are you acting with integrity? Examine where, how, what and who you are spending your time, thoughts and energy on?
