Last week, I briefly shared how Dr. Myles Munroe changed my life personally. It was without a doubt one of the hardest articles I’ve ever written. When someone changes your life, as he did for me, it is nearly impossible to narrow down that impact to 600 words.
As the new reality of a world without his physical presence settles in, I find myself turning to his spiritual presence in a new way. I believe words are life or death and they carry the spirit of the person who speaks them. We are blessed to live in a world where Dr. Myles has left tens of millions of words on tape, video and in writing that we can still glean and grow from as we seek to live on purpose.

His words and vision were powerful! The gifted men and women on the plane who died with him, submitted their talents to helping him further the message of the Kingdom. My prayers go out to the families of everyone on the flight. I pray for them and the nation daily. And, I trust that just as I find strength and comfort in the words and memories of Pastor Myles, they will do the same with the memories of their loved ones.
Today, I share just three of his quotes that were pivotal to my growth and development:
1. “When the purpose of a thing is misunderstood, abuse is inevitable.” All around us we see the danger of not understanding purpose. All types of abuse are rooted in not comprehending the value and power of the person or thing that is abused. Learning my purpose and its relevance taught me to remove myself from situations and relationships where I am not valued. Spending too much time where you are not understood cannot result in any positive outcome.
2. “Irresponsibility is freedom’s deadliest enemy.” I used to believe that freedom was being able to do what I want, when I want it. However, real freedom is not acting without restraint. It is acting with responsibility because we understand the power of our influence. Irresponsible behavior will eventually cut us off from freedom. Anyone living on a tight budget knows the repercussions of behaving irresponsibly—we lose the ability to do what we want in the end.
3. “You possess the capacity to be a leader within the sphere of the purpose for which you were born.” Like many, I used to believe that leadership was for the anointed few and I wasn’t one of them. Through his teachings, I discovered that we are all leaders because we are always leading ourselves. When we understand that, it instills a sense of confidence and responsibility. We don’t have to wait for others to lead change. When we are true to our purpose we can be the person who takes the initiative to make a difference.
I will never forget Dr. Myles Munroe and his wife, Pastor Ruth. Their lives made an indelible mark on who I am. In the wake of their deaths, I am more committed to living. Their lives revealed the power of honoring your purpose, while serving God and others. There may be questions that are never answered and there will be pains that will sometimes settle into silence and then suddenly bring forth tears because they feel fresh and new. But, we must never forget that if we wish to honor the memory of the Munroes—and the other passengers—we must chew the marrow from life, no matter how short or long. Today…honor their legacy and LIVE!
