Da Baby’s older brother Glen Johnson, 34, died as a result of a gunshot wound Tuesday. According to Billboard the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department of North Carolina were notified of a shooting that they identified as an assault with a deadly weapon on November, 3 at about 1:39 p.m.
They arrived on the scene and found Johnson’s body. He was then transported to a hospital in the area where he was pronounced dead. The police reportedly disclosed that, “This incident is currently classified as a death investigation.”
He is survived by three daughters and a son.
TMZ has reported that the death is expected to be ruled a suicide but Billboard reports that has not yet been confirmed by the Mecklenburg Medical Examiner’s Office and details are still emerging.
Da Baby, whose real name is Jonathan Lyndale Kirk updated his Instagram bio to read the phrase “LONG LIVE MY BROTHER.” Beside the message are emojis of a black heat and a white dove.
Kirk has referred to his brother’s struggles in his music. On his song “Intro,” he raps “My brother be thinkin’ that we don’t love him/ and let him struggle like we ain’t family/ Like I won’t give up all I got to see you happy.”
He rapped the lyrics on his Instagram story after his brother’s death writing “Like I won’t give up all I got to see you happy,” in the caption for the video.
Kirk also posted a video of himself instructing his 15 million followers to check in with their loved ones from the front seat of a car. “Good morning, check on ya people,” he says on the clip. “Somebody probably just want you to call and say ‘Wassup are you straight?’ Do that.”
