Actress DeWanda Wise is the face that will be playing the iconic Nola Darling in Spike Lee’s new Netflix series, a modern update to his acclaimed movie She’s Gotta Have It, the acclaimed director posted on his instagram Friday.
“Ms. DeWanda Wise Is Ms. Nola Darling,” the acclaimed director captioned in an instagram photo standing next to the gorgeous actress (who is pulling off the ultimate Bantu Knot style), also adding: “BLACK WOMAN MAGIC YA-DIG?”
The 10-part series follows a 2016 Nola Darling as a Brooklyn-based artist in her late 20s that struggles juggling friends, work and her three lovers — just like in the movie.

In the original 1986 version, which was Lee’s first feature film, Nola’s role was played by Tracy Camilla Johns.
Wise has been building her portfolio with other recent high profile TV gigs like Fox’s series Shots Fired and a recurring role on the second season in the drama Underground. She’s Gotta Have It will be her first major lead role.
The Chi-Raq filmmaker will direct each episode and executive produce alongside his wife Tonya Lewis Lee. Her husband credits her with having the initial idea to turn his movie into a series.
We can’t wait!
