For the second year, we at ESSENCE magazine are thrilled and honored to have been nominated for a GLAAD award, an award that celebrates various media outlets’ fair, accurate and inclusive coverage of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
Nominated for Outstanding Magazine Overall Coverage, ESSENCE magazine will face off with Glamour, Out, Sports Illustrated and Time.
“We are incredibly honored to be recognized by GLAAD with this special nomination,” said ESSENCE editor-in-chief Vanessa de Luca. “ESSENCE is a space where we understand the power of inclusion, and we are committed to making sure all stories are heard.”
Making sure stories are heard, said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis, is the mission of the awards.
“For nearly 30 years, the GLAAD Media Awards have raised the bar for inclusion in news and entertainment, transforming LGBT representations in media and moving the dial for acceptance across the globe,” Ellis said in a press release. “It’s been a remarkable year for equality, and nowhere is that more evident than in the visibility LGBT people have gained across media.”
This year’s nominees include Dear White People (Outstanding Film-Limited Release), Orange is the New Black (Outstanding Comedy Series), How to Get Away With Murder (Outstanding Drama Series), and Melissa Harris-Perry (“Change is Coming to the South”—Outstanding TV Journalism Segment). Winners will be announced in a ceremony on March 21, 2015 in Los Angeles.
