Erykah Badu is a woman of many talents known to wear many stylish hats, both on and off the stage.
The influential music and style icon is a four-time Grammy Award winner, wellness guru and host. But in addition to performing, writing songs and deejaying, thesinger-songwriter is also a licensed doula, having helped to deliver more than 40 babies. Or what will soon be 41 babies, thanks to the recent revela that 21-year-old model Simone Thompson a.k.a. Slick Woods chose Badu to be her spiritual guide through her upcoming birth.
Woods, who is known as one of the faces fronting Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty brand and Fenty x PUMA campaigns, shared with ElleUK magazine that the godmother of soul would be her doula.
“She’s [Badu] a mommy role model,” Woods said during her interview with Elle UK. “A mother I look up to, who kills her shit and is a boss-ass bitch.”
In fact, when Badu appeared on the Desus & Mero show back in November 2017, she told the hilarious duo that she’s always been fascinated by childbirth.
“I was studying and very interested in childbirth and it’s a natural thing we’ve been doing for thousands of years,” said Badu. “My job as a doula is to be like water. You’re helpful to the mother, you’re helpful to the father. You’re helpful to the midwife…”
Woods also revealed during the interview that she’s having a boy and his name will be Saphir. The name is a play on the September birthstone, which is the month she’s expected to give birth.
“My son’s going to be gorgeousss,” she proudly exclaimed.
