Kerry Washington was hard to miss on the red carpet of the 88th Annual Academy Awards. Aside from being one of the few people of color to grace the red carpet, Washington also sported an edgy–and super chic— leather and chiffon gown. Needless to say, it’s not often that someone shows up wearing leather to the Academy Awards, but Washington pulled it off. Equally chic, was her sleek and curly bouffant ponytail. Celebrity stylist, Takisha Sturdivant-Drew shared her technique in created the look so that you can re-create this style at home.
Sturdivant-Drew says she, “wanted to create a bold look that matched her black and white leather dress. We kept the hair edgy and youthful.” To get the look, Sturdivant-Brown curled pieces of Washington’s hair using the GHD Curve Soft Curl Iron ($199) alternating between clockwise and counter clockwise to add dimension. She then clipped TSD Hair extensions in the center of Washinton’s head and used a fine-tooth comb to tease the roots and add volume. Finally, she pulled the hair back into a ponytail using a leather Versace band.
Of course, if you don’t have a Versace leather hair tie just lying around the house, any neutral elastic will do— just wrap a few strands of hair around the band to hide it.
