Our prayers have finally been answered.
Nearly 20 years after the debut of Girlfriends, die hard fans have been hoping for an official reboot or film adaptation and it’s finally happening. Well, kinda.
Our “girlfriends” Tracee Ellis Ross — who’s currently slaying our October cover — Golden Brooks, Persia White and Jill Marie Jones will be reuniting for an upcoming episode of black-ish next month.
“The timing was perfect to be able to bring Girlfriends to a whole new audience. We haven’t all been together on camera since 2006,” Ross tells EW. “Girlfriends ran for eight years and was important to so many people. Being able to merge the worlds of black-ish and Girlfriends was surreal for me—and so much fun. These are women I grew up with and love deeply and it was easy to tap back into the magic of our chemistry and how much we love each other. It was giggles on top of giggles on top of giggles.”
The show, which aired from 2000-2008 on UPN, is considered one of the most influential TV shows to impact Black culture. It was the first time our generation saw ourselves on television and represented a variety of characters that reflected the diversity of Black women.
Season six of black-ish premieres September 24 at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC and the “Girlfriends” episode will debut on October 8.
Mark your calendar sis—it’s going to be epic.
