We can imagine that Idris Elba gets every role he ever auditioned for (because duh) but in a recent interview, the British bae revealed that there was a role in one of our favorite Black romantic comedies that he didn’t get it.
Promoting his new film, The Mountain Between Us, the 46-year-old told radio host Angie Martinez that he auditioned for the role of Kelby in Brown Sugar.
“When I first started out, I auditioned for Brown Sugar,” he told Martinez. “Boris Kodjoe got that role.”
Kodjoe (momentarily) won the heart of Sanaa Lathan in the film and acting alongside his wife and Soul Food co-star Nicole Ari Parker as well as Taye Diggs, Queen Latifah and Mos Def.
Idris admits that losing out on the part is still like rubbing salt in an open wound so much so that he hasn’t even seen the movie.
“This is an absolute true story. I didn’t even watch it I was so salty!”
We guess he doesn’t know the fate of how things turned out between Sidney and Kelby or he’d be salty about that too.
