Issa Rae is known for her witty one-liners (Remember: “I’m rooting for everybody Black”?) And now she’s back not only with quotes we’re sure to use as Instagram captions soon, but a reminder to Black women that we’re too humble too often.
While accepting the Women In Film Emerging Entrepreneur Award earlier this week in Los Angeles, Rae took to the podium, telling the crowd that when creating her speech, she was inspired by hip hop.
“As women we tend to downplay ourselves. We tend to dim our light and we’re kind of conditioned socially to be humble. And I grew up in the age of hip hop…and none of my favorite artists are humble,” Rae explained. “So in writing my speech, I decided to embrace this moment in honor of them.”
Rae then went in (jokingly, of course): “I’m the first so you future hoes need to bow down unless you’re ready to catch my fade with your weak ass. I’m closing all doors behind me, so if you didn’t make it in, oops, your bad.”
“Entrepreneur means I did that shit by myself,” she continued to applause and laughter.
In her speech, she thanked her team, but added: “Y’all some suckers.” Rae also told HBO to “run me my money.”
“In conclusion,” https://www.essence.com/celebrity/issa-rae-cast-little-black-ish-marsai-martin/the Little star said, “Entrepreneur till I die; I deserve this. Bye.”
We stan a confident queen!
