Jhene Aiko told fans that she planned to delay releasing new music out of respect for the late Nipsey Hussle.
She shared her decision in a response to a fan who asked when she had planned on dropping new sounds.
“Out of respect for Nipsey Hussle, I will be postponing the release of the new music I planned on releasing this month…until I feel the time is right,” she began. “I want to take this time to remember and reflect on the life of the legendary Nipsey Hussle.”
“Thank you for understanding,” she added. “Long live NH.”
Hussle’s family and friends–along with thousands of fans –will honor the slain rapper at the Staples Center on Thursday. Nipsey Hussle’s “Celebration of Life,” as the event is called, will be open to members of the public who are able to secure tickets, starting at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
Other artists like YG, Schoolboy Q, 03 Greedo, Kash Doll, and Machine Gun Kelly have also delayed the release of new music as they mourn the loss of Hussle, who real name was Ermias Asghedom. He died last month at the age of 33.
Aiko, who is also a native of Los Angeles, shared an emotional Instagram post soon after Hussle’s death, calling him “a gem.”
“You so inspired me, motivated me,” she wrote, “you made me so proud to be from the same city. I am honored to have known you and so thankful that you always showed me love and support.”
“People always thought [you] were one of my brothers and in a way, you are. My heart is so heavy. We really lost a gem. L.A is weeping. It’ll never be the same,” Aiko added before sending her “deepest condolences” to his partner Lauren London, his children and family.
