In September 2017, Nas and Nicki Minaj started dating and it seemed hip-hop had found a new power couple.
By January of the new year, the two called it quits and it looks like there may have been one person who was perhaps more upset by their split than fans —the rapper’s ex-wife, Kelis.
In an interview with The Hollywood Unlocked, the singer admitted that while she didn’t know Nicki and Nas had started dating, she was thrilled once she heard the news.
“I had no idea they were even dating until his birthday because I saw pictures and I was like, what is that Argentinian flamenco outfit he was wearing!” she said.
When their relationship came to an end, the singer jokingly admitted that she would really like for the two MCs to get back together.
“I don’t want him,” explained Kelis. “First of all, it’s so funny because people thought I was angry. Why? Take him! Please dear God, take him back! Please! I beg of you take him back! I think he’s lonely. Seriously, this all started when she left. Come back! I was not mad at all. I was not mad.”
Kelis and Nas were married from 2005-2010 and the singer recently shared that their marriage was no happily ever after.
Fans of Kelis and Nas’ coupledom still have strong feelings about their relationship and subsequent divorce and while she gets it, the singer really wants them to move on because, well, she has.
“Every generation has their couples, you know what I mean? For me, it was like Trench and Peppa,” she said. “It was like, ‘love them.’ We were like, they’re the best couple ever and you feel like you’re part of their story. You know, I love romance, like I love it so to watch them or to watch Big and Faith. For my generation, watching them was amazing. So I get the fact that people saw us and it became unreal but I think the issue is that people need to see that this is real life and these are real people and like, real hearts are broken and real stuff happens. It’s funny to me because when we first broke up, I expected it. What boggles my mind is, nine years later, the fact that people still say it, that’s when I get an eye twitch.”
Since their divorce, the 39-year-old Harlem native remarried real estate agent Mike Mora in December 2014 and in November the following year, they welcomed their son, Sheperd.
“Me and my man are great. My man is younger than me. He’s cute!”
