The damage Hurricane Irma and Maria caused Puerto Rico has put the U.S. territory in a state of emergency, with little to no energy going to the island.
As reported by The Atlantic, fewer than 250 of the island’s 1,600 cellphone towers in Puerto Rico are operational, and damaged ports, roads, and airports are slowing the arrival and transport of aid. Communication has been severely limited and some remote towns are only now being contacted.
In an effort to draw support for their homeland, many celebrities have been vocal about supporting the island financially and sending prayers.
On Monday, La La Anthony made an emotional PSA on all her social media channels, asking for relief. “I’m just so saddened by everything happening in the world right now,” she begins. “The earthquakes in Mexico, the hurricanes that have devastated the Caribbean and my island of Puerto Rico —which I still have not heard from any of my family there. So I’m hoping and praying that everyone is OK. And I just want you to know that I’ve partnered with United for Puerto Rico.”
Also speaking out and supporting United for Puerto Rico are Marc Anthony, Alex Rodriguez, Carmelo Anthony, Daddy Yankee, Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez.
“Given the loss and devastation, we need to pay attention and support Puerto Rico with donations and contributions,” Lopez said in a press conference with New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo.
“Alex Rodriguez and I, who are both New Yorkers, are utilizing all our resources in entertainment, sports and business to garner support for Puerto Rican and Caribbean relief efforts. And I will be donating $1 million from the proceeds of my Las Vegas show to the designated beneficiary charitable and NGO organizations.”
It’s been reported that the damage from the late summer hurricanes have set the island back decades.
