We all get a little shy about shooting our shot, and comedian Lil Rel Howery recently opened up about why he hasn’t fired on one of Hollywood’s most talented directors.
Howery, whose new series Rel hits Fox this Sunday, recently dropped by ESSENCE to chat with editors Charli Penn and Cori Murray on Yes, Girl! The comedian dished on attending ESSENCE’s annual Black Women in Hollywood event earlier this year, and spotting his crush.
“I love y’all, I felt exclusive,” Howery said of attending the A-list event, adding that he felt lucky to be one of the few men invited. “You had Ava [DuVernay] there. I’ve always had a little crush on Ava.”
When asked if he’d ever shoot his shot with the award-winning director, Howery explained that you’d need to have it together to shoot your shot with DuVernay.
“You can’t just step to Ava,” the Get Out actor and father of one explained.
And, he admitted that DuVernay isn’t his only #WCW, revealing that Lupita Nyong’o is also “fine” and “so nice and cool.”
Howery, who is looking for love a second time after divorcing in 2016, revealed that, for him, the perfect woman is “affectionate, she’s chill but funny.”
“She’s very ambitious, she’s easy to talk to, she’s awkward,” he added. “People who are comfortable with their awkwardness, to me, are usually the coolest people.”
