Lizzo almost quit music two years ago.
The “Juice” singer says she considered stepping away from the music industry when her hit song “Truth Hurts” first dropped and didn’t do as well as she had expected.
“The day I released ‘Truth Hurts’ was probably one of the darkest days I’ve had ever in my career,” she told People magazine. “I remember thinking, ‘If I quit music now, nobody would notice. This is my best song ever, and nobody cares.'”
“I was like, ‘Fuck it, I’m done.’ And a lot of people rallied; my producer, my publicist and my family, they were like, ‘Just keep going because this is the darkest before the dawn,'” she said. By this time, she had been hustling her way in the industry for almost a decade.
Luckily, she chose to stay the course and it took another two years before “Truth Hurts” became a hit. It received a boost earlier this year when it eas featured in Netflix’s Someone Great with Gina Rodriguez. The song went on to reach No.1 on the Billboard rhythmic chart and No.6 on the Hot 100 countdown.
“Who would have thunk?” she said. “What a moment in a movie can do for an artist is crazy. I had everything else: the hard work, the good music, touring — but then there’s that extra-special magic that nobody really knows what it is that can really change your life.”
Adds the star: “Now the song that made me want to quit is the song that everyone’s falling in love with me for, which is such a testament to journeys: Your darkest day turns into your brightest triumph.”
We’re glad you didn’t give up, Lizzo!
