Actress Lupita Nyong’o hasn’t been on the Hollywood circuit longer than a minute but the fashion world has definitely taken notice of her undeniably chic style. Miuccia Prada swooped in first to feature the 12 Years A Slave actress in Miu Miu’s Spring/Summer 2014 ad campaign, along with several other rising stars including Elle Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen (siblings of Dakota Fanning and the Olsen Twins, respectively).
The campaign, shot by fashion photographers Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, features the ladies donning “classics, but not quite as they should be – as if seen in a dream,” revealed the Italian fashion house. This explains Nyong’o’s look perfectly: sweet knit knee-highs and jeweled Mary Janes while her “bad-girl bustier drips with jewels,” all while sitting poised in front of a dreamy midnight back-drop.
Lupita Nyong’o‘s campaign adds to the list of black women Miuccia Prada has featured within the past year. The Italian designer kicked off the year with an epic short film for Miu Miu titled The Door, directed by Ava DuVernay, featuring Gabrielle Union and Alfre Woodard. Following that, the designer’s Prada advertisement for Fall 2013 featured the first black model in nearly 20-years, Kenyan beauty Malaika Firth. And to close out the year, Prada debuted it’s Spring/Summer 2014 campaign “Ahead of The Class” featuring Firth again and Congolese/Italian model-of-the-moment Cindy Bruna. It’s absolutely refreshing to see more color in fashion.
