As the plight of Chicago continues to make headlines across the nation, First Lady Michelle Obama will travel to the Windy City to discuss youth violence, according to the White House.
Mrs. Obama will join Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Allstate Corporation President Thomas J. Wilson and Loop Capital CEO James Reynolds, Jr. for lunch at The Hilton on April 10.
“First Lady Michelle Obama will return to her hometown to address local business and community leaders about providing more opportunities for young people to achieve their full potential,” read the announcement from the White House.
Mrs. Obama is no stranger to the violence in Chicago. She attended the funeral of slain teen Hadiya Pendleton in February. The First Lady went a step further and invited Pendleton’s parents to attend the State of the Union Address.
There’s no word if the leaders will discuss related troubles in Chicago—54 public school closings and the shooting death of six-month-old baby Jonylah Watkins.
“The greatest thing we can do as a city is give our children the support they need to build a successful life,” Emanuel said. “We are honored to have the First Lady’s support in this effort. I will work tirelessly to provide safe alternatives that reduce the risk of our kids getting involved with drugs, gangs, and violence.”
