With the recent suicide deaths of beloved celebrities Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade, there has been more widespread media coverage about the potentially tragic effects of mental health and depression, resulting in many stars sharing their own personal battles with their fans.
Singer Michelle Williams, one-third of Destiny’s Child, has always been vocal about her own struggle with depression and she recently opened up about taking her own advice and getting the help she needs.
The 37-year-old took to Instagram on Tuesday to share a very important decision she’s made in regards to her mental health.
“For years I have dedicated myself to increasing awareness of mental health and empowering people to recognize when it’s time to seek help, support and guidance from those that love and care for your wellbeing. I recently listened to the same advice I have given to thousands around the world and sought help from a great team of healthcare professionals,” Williams continued. “Today I proudly, happily and healthily stand here as someone who will continue to always lead by example as I tirelessly advocate for the betterment of those in need, if you change your mind, you can change your life.”
Williams has been vocal about mental health awareness throughout the years and during an interview with The Talk in 2017 even shared her struggle with suicidal thoughts during her prime years as a member of Destiny’s Child.
“I was suicidal, I was to that place where it got so dark and heavy,” she shared.
Williams represents the story of many individuals in our everyday lives on a constant battle with depression, some who haven’t gotten the courage to get help. Williams aims to normalize the mental health discussion in society and should be seen as a source of motivation for us all to seek the healthy lifestyle we all deserve.
