It has been 20 years since Aaliyah released her “One in a Million” single and Missy Elliott was there to remember that fact.
The “Work It” singer took to Instagram this weekend to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 1996 single, dedicating the post to Aaliyah, who died in 2001. The song was written and producer by Missy and Timbaland, who were long-time Aaliyah collaborators.

“One in a Million” was the first single of the Aaliyah’s second studio album of the same name. Rolling Stone named it the 90th best album of the 90s and one of the top 30 hip hop/R&B albums of period. It produced other hit singles like “If Your Girl Only Knew” and “4 Page Letter”.
Missy has always spoken about how well she got along with Aaliyah and how much she misses her. She spoke to MTV in 2010 about how they first met:
“When me and Tim first went to work with her, we were so nervous,” she said. “She was such a big star, and I was scared she was gonna be some diva, sipping on tea, with people fixing her hair and nails, and she would say, “What is this music you got! It’s wack!” But when we walked in the studio, her smile made the whole room glow! She was like “Heyyyyy!” and gave us big hugs and made us feel like we were her cousins from down South. She was a very sweet spirit! Never seen her angry as long as I’ve known her, and in this business, that’s unheard of!”
