In celebration of Janelle Monáe’s second studio album, The Electric Lady, music icon Prince sent a singing telegram to her dressing room.
A man surprised Monáe with a song mirrored after Prince’s “Kiss” lyrics and showered the songstress with a bouquet of flowers.
Prince personally wrote the lyrics to congratulate Monáe for her hard work on the LP, which dropped this past Tuesday. The “Purple Rain” singer appears on Monáe’s track “Givin’ Em What They Love,” off her new album. Monáe says to have a legend like Prince agree to collaborate with her was quite the honor.
“He’s been so excited about my career, and I don’t take that for granted,” says Monáe. “He’s a mentor to me. He took me on tour with him. It was very organic for us to work together, but I know he does not collaborate with everybody that he performs with, and I don’t take that for granted. I got the opportunity to produce him, so to present the ideas and see it through, I was just honored that he trusted me.”
