Supermodel Naomi Campbell Covers ESSENCE's September Fashion Issue, Honoring Dapper Dan
In a comeback story of epic proportions, designer Dapper Dan stays true to his uptown Roots as he retakes the fashion world by storm - with a little help from his friend, supermodel Naomi Campbell.
Sometimes things just click. That’s exactly how we feel about our September fashion issue.
A few months ago, a group of staffers casually gathered inside one of our conference rooms to brainstorm the most exciting ways to showcase the season’s hottest designers and fall trends. We started talking about fashion legend Dapper Dan, and everyone’s eyes lit up when we realized that we were all thinking Harlem and visualizing how magnificent it would be to photograph the latest Gucci-Dapper Dan collection in the uptown neighborhood Dan sooo embodies and loves calling home.
One thing quickly led to another and within a few short weeks, we assembled our September issue dream team—Black fashion royalty, really—in Harlem for our cover story. In attendance: designer Dapper Dan, supermodel Naomi Campbell, critically-acclaimed NYC documentary photographer Jamel Shabazz, and former Vogue editor-at-large and fashion extraordinaire André Leon Talley. We know we’re slightly biased, but we think our “Haute in Harlem” cover shoot is everything. We hope you do, too.
To top off our momentous September, we’re throwing the ultimate ESSENCE Street Style day party on Sunday, September 9. Join us and our host, actress and comedian Amanda Seales, as we celebrate style, culture and community—and honor music superstar and celebrity chef Kelis, and plus-size style influencer Kellie Brown (yes, they will be there!) at Duggal Greenhouse in Brooklyn. Doors open at 12:00 P.M. Hope to see you there!
And be sure to pick up the ESSENCE’s September issue on newsstands on August 24.
With love,
Team Essence
