Nipsey Hussle’s sister has filed a petition to become the legal guardian of his 10-year-old daughter Emani Asghedom.
According to legal documents obtained by People Magazine, Samantha Smith “has always been a presence in Emani’s life and along with the rest of Emani’s paternal family has assisted in her care and continues to do so.”
Smith wanted to “ensure [Emani’s] continued stability,” and that she “can continue to live with family members with whom she has always had close ties.” The documents also said that Smith had “consistent and frequent contact” Emani after having lived with her brother and niece for a period of time between 2014 and 2015.
Although it appears Smith has the support of Hussle’s father, Dawit Asghedom, as he signed the documents, it’s not clear how Emani’s mother Tasha Foster feels. She has yet to respond to the filling.
Nipsey, whose birth name is Ermias Joseph Asghedom, was gunned down on March 31 in front of his store, The Marathon Clothing, in Los Angeles. He was 33.
Following his death, Smith wrote a tribute to her brother on Instagram, promising she’d look after his family.
“I got Lauren. I got Emani. I got Kross. I got Sam, he is my responsibility now. He is my big little brother. I got mommy and Granny and Pop,” she wrote. “You gave me so many tools.”
