When a caller asked Jones to reveal his choice for a Democratic candidate that could take on President Donald Trump in the next election, Mama O was his answer.
“For real. Listen, I’m telling you. I love a lot of the Democrats,” he said. “I love Kamala Harris, who’s coming up in California. I love Cory Booker, who I’ve known for 20 years. This new Joe Kennedy, the third coming-up, redheaded Kennedy kid. He’s awesome.”
“But it takes a superstar to beat a superstar,” he added. “I think if Oprah Winfrey ran, she’d win all 50 states. It’d be a wrap.”
Although Oprah has always dismissed any questions of a presidential run, she recently said that seeing Trump’s successful bid for the White House has made her rethink her own possibilities.
“I actually never thought that that was — I never considered the conversation even a possibility. I just thought, oh, oh,” she said in a conversation with billionaire David Rubenstein on Bloomberg’s “The David Rubenstein Show: Peer-to-Peer Conversations“ taped in December.
A big part of her apparent change of heart is that she thought “you had to know so much more than I thought you had to know,” she said.
The interview, released early this month, created a frenzied buzz at the idea of Oprah throwing her hat in the political ring.
But her BFF Gayle King quickly shut down that idea a few days later: “I would bet my first, second born and any unborn children to come, that ain’t never happening… N-E-V-A-H,” she said.
Like Van Jones, we can keep hope alive!
