With allegations of an abusive cult being made public and a history of sexual misconduct, people are now calling for R. Kelly to be dropped from his label.
A Care2 petition has received over 14,000 signatures calling for Sony to drop the R&B singer. The petition is just a few hundred signatures shy of its 15,000-signature goal.
“R&B singer R. Kelly has preyed on teenage girls for the past 25 years,” the petition reads. “It’s time our society stops his cycle of abuse. Join us in telling Sony to #DropRKelly for habitually preying on teenage girls for the past 25 years!”
This comes after a damning BuzzFeed report exposed the singer’s abusive cult, where he holds women against their will. The parents of the young women in the cult and former associates of Kelly have spoken out, with an alleged former girlfriend stating Kelly had been raising one victim since 14 or 15.
Chicago attorney Susan. E Loggans declined to tell BuzzFeed exactly how many settlements she’s negotiated with Kelly before lawsuits were filed, but states there were “numerous” with one involving a 17-year-old victim.
“We must not let habitual abusers float above justice simply because they are rich and famous,” the petition continues. “Let’s work together to turn R. Kelly into a symbol for victim’s rights, reminding abusers everywhere that no one is untouchable.”
