Q-Tip will dedicate the next episode of his Beats 1 show “Abstract Radio” to his mother, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia.
The rapper took to Instagram to open up about taking care of his mother, telling fans, “It’s her birthday on Dec. 9. Shouts out to all the sag’s out there. My mother suffers with dementia and Alzheimer’s. So I’m going to be playing a lot of her favorite songs.”
Q-Tip added, “The dedication is not only to my mother, but all those out there who suffer with dementia and the families who have to deal with or take care of a loved one who suffers with dementia.”
The rapper called taking care of his mother an “eye-opening and inspirational” experience.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s is more prevalent among African-Americans than among whites and is a greater familial risk to caregiving families.
Black people are also likely to be diagnosed at a later stage, face a higher rate of false-positive results, and the disease is much more likely to be underreported.
“I hope that this show is inspirational to you,” Q-Tip added in the video. “Mom, I love you so much and this show is not enough to express that.”
