Queen Latifah has been the familiar face of CoverGirl for quite a while and recently the actress stopped by ESSENCE to touch on her legacy as the face of the makeup brand, diversity, and it’s latest ambassador, Issa Rae.
Speaking with editor Danielle Kwateng-Clark, Latifah called CoverGirl’s diversity “a wonderful thing.”
“For me, it’s a wonderful thing. It’s what it should have always been and what I started with…creating this different identity of what a covergirl looks like and should look like and should be,” she told ESSENCE. “I just kind of added to what it should be and I think that was great, like opening the door.”
Latifah’s work as the face of CoverGirl has definitely opened the door for other Black women to see themselves as a covergirl.
And, Insecure creator Issa Rae is continuing her work. The actress joined the CoverGirl family in September, sharing the news on Instagram.
“I remember being an awkward black girl in high school, reading the pages of my favorite magazines, casually flipping through @COVERGIRL ads, singing their slogan in my head,” Rae wrote. “Never EVER in my life did I imagine I’d be one. I am SO honored and SO excited for what’s to come.”
“People need this,” Latifah added. “The demand is there.”
