Who is KING? They’re an LA-based R&B trio made up of twin sisters Paris and Amber Strother and Anita Bias creating some of the most eclectic beats and lush harmonies around. They’re a new generation’s Erykah Badu meets the sweet sopranos of Aaliyah, Deniece Williams and Minnie Riperton—all wrapped in one soulful blanket. They write and produce their own music—Paris is the resident beat maker. They’re “king of their own musical kingdom,” they recently told NPR’s Artie Cornish. Watch their new video below
KING first gained buzz when they released their 2011 debut EP, The Story. A year later they featured on the song “Move Love” from the Robert Glasper’s Experiment’s 2012 Grammy-winning album Black Radio. In 2013, the group gained the endorsement of all endorsements when Prince discovered their music on YouTube and asked them to go on tour with him.
And now they’re finally releasing their debut full-length album we are KING on February 5, 2016. Here, watch “The Greatest,” the first single from their upcoming album, which pays homage to Muhammad Ali.
“We’ve always been inspired by Muhammad Ali’s unwavering confidence and grace,” KING tells ESSENCE. “The lyrics and video are an homage to his legacy and the concept that there is greatness in all of us. The imagery was inspired by our great love for the classic video game era; we wanted to recreate that fun and energy to hopefully inspire greatness in everyone who sees the video.”
