Steve Harvey says he had his stepdaughter’s fiance followed when they first started dating.
The comedian revealed the news to his “Steve Harvey” talk-show audience Friday when talking to guests Garcelle Beauvais, Tracey Edmonds, Ta’Rhonda Jones, and Kim Gravel about their dating experience with men their families didn’t like. He referenced reports that Selena Gomez‘s mother disapproved of her relationship with Justin Bieber to launch the conversation.
Harvey’s youngest stepdaughter, Lori, is engaged to Dutch football star Memphis Depay. When asked whether he was worried about the 21-year-old Lori dating an athlete, Harvey said that he did worry at first and decided to have Depay followed.
“She didn’t know,” he said. “She knows now. But when she found out she was upset.”
Harvey couldn’t understand why she would be angry: “What you trippin’ for? I’m trying to help you,” he added. “You think he cute, I don’t. You find him attractive. The boy is just a boy to me.”
In the end, he said that he just wanted to make sure that a man could care for Lori like he did.
“If you’re not going to treat her the way I’ve treated her, and the way I’ve treated her mama, then you can’t have her,” he said. “And then I’m going to fix it.”
The young couple announced their engagement this past summer. Harvey also shared the news in a congratulatory tweet, calling Depay “a good one.”
