SZA happens to be one of our favorite young artists on the scene, so taking a peek into her closet seemed like the next logical step in our growing fandom of the singer.
Lucky for us, the 26-year-old opened up her funky closet to Coveteur and dished on everything from how her weight loss influenced her style to breaking into the music industry.
“I’m low key into ’90s style,” shares SZA, also revealing that there’s more to her preference than just an affinity for the ’90’s aesthetic.
“I’ve consistently been dressing in baggy clothes because I was heavy. I was 200 pounds but that’s not really public knowledge. I was a lot bigger, so wearing baggy clothes not so much as a ’90s thing, it was what was comfortable and what fit.”
The star shares that when it comes to her relationship with fashion and weight loss it’s all about freedom.
“When I lost weight I didn’t want to wear baggy clothes anymore. I worked really hard not to have to wear baggy clothes. And now I just feel like it’s how I’m generally comfortable. Instead of doing just what was available, I can wear what’s I want, and that’s a blessing.”
While breaking into the music industry is a lifelong dream for most artists, SZA says that it just fell into her lap.
“I had an ‘aha’ moment when I realized I was trapped [in my job], so then I realized I should just totally get into [music] and try my best and enjoy it! I fell in love with it by accident [laughs].
As far as her much-anticipated album goes, the star says it’s all about the fact that this thing called life is much bigger than us.
“CTRL is about loss and the realization that nobody has control. I don’t have control, you don’t, Trump doesn’t have control—it doesn’t work that way. Everything is a free, spinning, and connected pieces of world.”
