Tina Knowles-Lawson has raised two superstar daughters, and she recently opened up about how she mothered Beyonce and Solange as the family navigated fame.
In a recent Facebook Live conversation, Ms. Tina told Maria Shriver that she was very strategic about her interactions with both daughters because of her own upbringing.
“I was very sensitive to that because I grew up and I felt like my mother liked my brother more and loved him more,” she told Shriver.
To ensure neither daughter felt the same way, Ms. Tina designated specific days of the week to spend time with each of them individually. And because Beyonce became famous in her hometown of Houston from the young age of 10, Ms. Tina made sure that both kids were in family therapy early, despite family’s reservations
“I took them to counseling very early so that the counselor could help Beyoncé be more sensitive to Solange because she couldn’t stand her for a minute.”
And that idea appears to have all worked out because the two sisters are closer than ever! They even shared the stage at Beyonce’s iconic #Beychella performances last month.
“I wanted Beyonce to be sensitive to the fact that Solange had to deal with being a little bit in her shadow,” Ms. Tina said. “And it made her way more sensitive and protective and they are still fiercely protective of each other.”
Mama always knows best! Happy Mother’s Day Ms. Tina!
