ABC’s Black-ish is getting its own spin-off show and the character it will follow might surprise you.
Yara Shahidi, who plays the Johnsons’ eldest daughter Zoey, will star in the program following her character as she heads off to college. The show’s creator, Kenya Barris, will oversee the college-set sitcom.
In addition to Barris, reports say that former Black-ish showrunner Larry Wilmore is also involved and “had an original idea for a college comedy, which was melded with the plan for a Zoey Black-ish spinoff.”

Wilmore, executive producer of the first 13 episodes of Black-ish, recently returned to a deal at ABC Studios.
A similar situation occurred in the ’80s, when NBC’s The Cosby Show was spun off into A Different World, which sent the Huxtables’ daughter Denise (Lisa Bonet) to college.
Seventeen-year-old Zoey is prepping for her future, which includes landing an internship at Teen Vogue. The spin-off is still in its early stages.
The third season of Black-ish airs Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. on ABC.
