More details are coming out about the Black-ish spin-off following Yara Shahidi’s character, Zoey Johnson, as she goes to college. Instead of being on ABC where her TV parents Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross) are, the show is of interest to the Freeform network.
As reported by Deadline, while the pilot was received well at ABC, it was deemed too young skewing for the broadcast network but would hit right into the millennial demo target of sibling Freeform. They also reveal that the pilot episode was written by Kenya Barris (Black-ish creator) and Larry Wilmore (former Black-ish showrunner).
Off the small screen, Shahidi is actually heading to college in real life, but plans to take a year off before starting.

“I’ve been working more than half of my life and that’s always been balanced with school and all of the other responsibilities,” she told PEOPLE. “So to have a year to focus on work and to focus on specified interests will be nice before I pick a career and choose what I want to study and my life path.”
No word on what college the 17-year-old plans to attend yet but we do know acceptance letters are coming in.
