Hot Picks is a column in which fashion insiders reveal their latest obsessions–sharing their recent purchases and must-have pieces.
As a Latina from Queens, Greivy, a fashion content creator, admits that she didn’t grow up seeing colorful clothing. Despite that, as an adult, she loves expressing herself through her personal style, which is made up of patterned wrap dresses and flattering statement items. These pieces include designer motorcycle jackets and mid-length dresses. At times, she also wears glittered gowns to black-tie events. “I show up every day just trying to inspire people because there’s a sea of sameness, especially when it comes to trends,” she shares. “I’m very interested in pieces that are going to start a conversation and can transition easily to another season.”
She is primarily associated with subverting what is deemed acceptable or trendy. She doesn’t feel it’s sufficient to wear what her influencer peers are wearing, instead, she is most interested in wearing items that make her feel confident. She tells me many of her choices for what she shoots are size-inclusive so that her followers can purchase what she’s wearing too. On the topic of regularly wearing what she posts, she declares what she shoots she wears. The creative director excitedly notes that you can expect to see her at events and invite-only presentations in previously worn items.
Growing up in Queens, she says, was an immersive experience. Greivy attributes her wide-ranging style to growing up in a multicultural environment around friends from different backgrounds. She recalls having friends with Mexican, Bengalese, and Colombian roots that she would attend holiday gatherings with. She and her friends supported one another by dressing in their respective clothing from different cultures. With saris, statement jewelry, and other pieces of clothing in tow, the girls she surrounded herself with grew together stylistically.
“Every single month, there was a different holiday we were welcome to be a part of,” she said. Greivy mentions that having friends from multiple nationalities meant being encouraged to wear clothing beyond jeans and what kids deem comfortable. She says she always felt welcome into her friend’s lives and their family’s celebrations.
As she got older, she felt inspired by the pop stars of the 2000s. She looked up to singers with distinct styles, including Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. “I also had a lot of friends that were more interested in more street style and the hip hop scenes.” This led her and her friends to purchase Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and baggy, oversized pieces. They also all wore chunky jewelry and acrylic nails. She even says she’d get her nails done every week.
Her content creation roots began when she attended beauty events in New York City and posted about the skincare and makeup products she was wearing on her Instagram account. By 2018, she says she’d grown a bit of a following on the platform. Before this year, she mentioned that she didn’t realize being an influencer was lucrative enough to do full-time. A Lancôme repost on the brand’s official Instagram page changed her logic.
Immediately afterward things picked up for her (years before launching a blog officially in 2018, she’d built a real estate portfolio and attended Baruch College, where she studied business). As she progressively built her following to where it is now, she has always stayed true to herself–she only posts items that feel right for her–and is unafraid to turn down brands if they aren’t speaking to her. These elements combined have made her one of the most compelling plus-size creators to follow online.
The brands she swears by right now include Derek Lam and Tanya Taylor. “I really like Derek Lam. I have so many dresses and the collection they had last year was beautiful. I love the cuts, I love the dresses,” she notes. “They have a lot of beautiful silky materials that they’re using for their clothing. Their dresses just flow and you could style them so many ways,” she says about the New York-based label, which launched in 2003. She tells me she’s a staunch supporter of Tanya Taylor because she enjoys the prints the brand creates. The content creator also feels both of these companies are size-inclusive.
During New York Fashion Week, you might catch Greivy in street style shots at various publications. She relies on bold hues and prints for those moments to speak for her. “I love having statement pieces because I’m always wearing bold colors and prints, so dainty will not necessarily serve what I’m trying to put together,” she adds.
When I see her in photos she is typically beaming while outfitted in pieces that are conversation starters. Nothing is understated about her looks, and she also isn’t peacocking, she dresses like this year-round: moody prints in yellows or rich blues and billowing cotton frocks with an immense level of detailing. Her eye is powerful, and it’s what sets her apart from her peers and others, who often follow algorithmic trends rather than rely on their own instincts.
“I am representing myself and it’s very obvious that people are just lost and just trying to do what’s trending so they could just be with the in crowd,” she says. “In a sea of beige I [stand out],” she adds.
Here are 7 essential pieces Greivy is loving right now.
“Statement prints are a must in my wardrobe and nothing makes me happier than a Farm Rio dress. I have so many and I absolutely love the statement they make. This is a dress that I will wear with the sandals or cowboy boots around in the winter with fool faux fur, sandals and warmer months, and so on!”
Available at Farm Rio“Love this coat it’s so me! In love with a versatile fabric that can be worn as a dress on a beautiful night out about town when the weather is just right!”
Available at Tanya Taylor“I have this dress in many colors. What I love about it is that it can be dressed up or down depending how you accessorize. I tend to gravitate towards brands that have staples each season so that I’m not chasing a trend but rather creating looks based on my style profile.”
