Hot Picks is a column in which fashion insiders reveal their latest obsessions–sharing their recent purchases and must-have pieces.
For good reason, Tiffany Hayes and her tunnel outfits stick out amongst the current WNBA players. Her fashion prowess isn’t stuck in the past nor clinging onto designer brands for relevancy, instead, her self-expression through clothing comes naturally to her. Hailing from Polk County in Central Florida, Hayes, who is a guard for the Las Vegas Aces and an Olympian, describes her personal style as comfortable and unique. She also shares that her outfits are about blending elements from various cultures. “I enjoy experimenting with new styles, playing with abstracts, and exploring unique fabrics,” she notes. “My wardrobe is a mix of different cultural influences, reflecting my passion for discovering diverse aesthetics through exploration and learning.”
She expresses that her journey with fashion began with a love for bold hues. In recent years, working with stylists including her current one Kristine Anigwe has helped her develop her understanding of textures and fabrics. The Las Vegas Aces player also credits being surrounded by creative individuals as a significant influence in elevating her unique style. “[It has allowed] me to express myself authentically,” she shared in an email.
Hayes’ tomboy chic looks ahead of games capture the versatility of women athletes and how often they lean into comfortability. A satin oversized jacket paired with shorts and rugged climbing boots paired with a trucker hat makes this notion clear. In another instance, she arrived at the tunnel in a baggy khaki trench coat and trousers in a similar hue–but to break up the proportions, she also wore a knit tank in cream. Stacked platform loafers were an unexpected addition to the previously mentioned look. Hayes walks confidently in each of these outfits, which is indicative of how clothing is something of a second skin to her. But these individual, style-ridden moments also highlight how sporty and high-end garments are reflective of her innermost self.
Growing up in Polk County significantly influenced Hayes and her fashion sense. “The vibrant and colorful atmosphere of the region is reflected in my clothing choices,” she shared. She adds that wearing bright colors has always boosted her confidence and allowed her to authentically express herself. Notably, she makes a conscious effort to support Black designers by incorporating their works into her game-day outfits. “By blending influences from Florida with designs from my hometown and beyond, I aim to infuse a sense of freedom into my style.”
The definitive eras that Hayes resonates with most are the 1960s and the 1990s. What’s so special about these periods? “The vibrant colors, music, and overall vibe of the 1960s inspire me,” she explained. As for the 1990s, she feels this was a time when self-expression was rampant and clothing was all about freedom from judgment. “These eras influence my style and reflect how people creatively express themselves in contemporary times.”
Currently, Hayes is focusing on building up her own brand called Seyah Ranara which will launch soon. “Seyah Renara is special to me as it embodies my creative vision.” She also notes that she enjoys Louis Vuitton’s creations. On the global house: “I really admire Louis Vuitton, especially with their new men’s creative director, Pharrell, who incorporates elements that resonate with me. Their innovative designs speak to my style.”
As she defines what’s seen as stylish in her own eyes, she has grappled with who she views as her icons: Virgil Abloh and A$AP Rocky. “I believe they have significantly influenced the fashion industry, particularly for Black creatives,” Hayes shares. “They have played a pivotal role in promoting diversity and inclusivity in fashion, demonstrating that marketability should be accessible to all individuals.” She also expresses that Abloh’s impact provides a platform for creatives who have often felt underrepresented.
