Ashanti’s musical prowess took over the early 2000s with a bang and so did her looks. The ideal Y2K style was what her earliest looks from her career embodied. From low-rise jeans, mini skirts, and ultra-cropped baby tees, Ashanti’s style led her to become one of the quintessential “It” Girls of the 2000s–arguably she was one of the most compelling artists to follow too. All the accessories worn in the ‘00s, from large hoop earrings, belts, and baguette mini bags were everywhere including on the singer.
Another thing we loved seeing her wear was matching sets. She donned a cropped tank and matching skirt often when performing including the all-brown look she wore to the 9th Annual Holyfield Foundation Main Event All-Star Weekend benefit concert in 2002. Both pieces were in a leather fabric that looked patched together to achieve a layered effect. She added a pair of pointed-toe tan boots to break up the color without veering off the theme. She also wore a striking diamond heart pendant necklace.
If this look doesn’t scream Y2K, then we don’t know what does. Her style has evolved over the years as many R&B stars from the early aughts have switched their look often, it’s also indicative of the ever-changing trends in fashion. The artist’s style inclination over the years has been reserved at times injected with elements of playfulness here and there. If you want to channel the “Foolish” singer’s carefree, colorful, and fresh early ’00s style, then this ensemble is for you.
