Maxine Waters is a political titan. Waters, a Democratic representative in the House of Representatives representing the 43rd Congressional District of California is currently serving her 17th term. Yesterday evening she was reelected. This powerful force is the most senior of all the Black women currently serving in Congress. Waters has gained respect as an advocate for women, children, people of color, the poor, veterans, and the elderly. Congresswoman Waters was the first woman and Black chair of the House Financial Services Committee. Notably, she chaired the Congressional Black Caucus from 1997 to 1999.
The adored representative is celebrated across generations for her infectious personality and policy changes pushing America forward. Throughout her political career, Waters has also been a style maven. Power suits have always been her choice to get across her dedication to a wardrobe fit for someone who is always on the go but also means business. Many of her style moments feature her in an array of blazers. At times she dons blouses that exude femininity and elegance too. For red carpet appearances, she settles for statement gowns. And for other instances, tailored mid-length skirts are also a go-to for her.
One of our favorite photos of Congresswoman Waters dates back to the 1990s. In it, she poses in front of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., wearing a double-breasted red blazer with gold adornments, a black mock-neck dress underneath, large golden earrings, a matching watch, and a striking ring. This look exudes power, change, and resilience. Emulating this key look from the 1990s effortlessly channels Congresswoman Waters’s energy. For over twenty years, Waters has enacted change for our community.
