Winnie Harlow has always had a unique look and air about her since busting through the fashion scene in 2014 as a model contestant on the 21st cycle of the hit television series America’s Next Top Model. But what sets her apart, aside from her vitiligo skin condition and drop-dead gorgeous features, is how down-to-earth she seems. Coming off the heels of the pandemic, Harlow was ready to make a serious life change. Although she relocated to Los Angeles for more space then, she was ready to find a permanent place to call home, especially after her lease in New York City ended. So, house hunting became her main quarantine hobby, allowing her to close on a newly built five-bedroom, 4,847 square feet property in Hollywood. After flipping through the pages of Architectural Digest to find an interior designer for her home, she landed on Bullard, who also designed RuPaul’s fabulous abode.
The entrepreneur and founder of Cay Skin recently opened her doors to Architectural Digest to highlight the work of the noted interior designer who curated the home to embody “calm energy, but a sense of glamour” to the space as told to the publication.
Since the house was new and didn’t need many renovations, Harlow and Bullard decided to main the white, neutral base while layering strong materials and cool textures. Black accents added drama to the kitchen and living room and naturally played into a monochromatic palette. Boucle chairs, footstools, lush white furry rugs, and porcelain marble fireplaces add a cozy and inviting touch. Of course, the model’s home wouldn’t be complete without a few glam and vintage statement pieces, like a pair of brass palm-leaf floor lamps by Tommaso Barbi from the 1970s, one powder room is covered in a custom wallpaper made out of Harlow’s test sheets for Zac Posen’s spring 2020 campaign, a vanity set, and photographs of fashion icons like Beverly Johnson and Grace Jones throughout as an homage to the Black models that came before her.
“I didn’t want it to be just me, so I thought it’d be beautiful to walk around my house and feel inspired,” said Harlow. “These amazing Black women are people who made pathways for me to walk. I get to wake up every day and see those trailblazers on my wall.”
Despite the glamour, several items from CB2, Soho Home, and The Shade Store are featured in her home. As Bullard notes, “There’s great design on every budget; it just takes weeding it out and finding the right fit.”
