Author, professor and Black feminist, Dr. Brittney Cooper, did not hold back as she took to the 2018 ESSENCE Festival Empowerment stage to share her thoughts on how America constantly rejects narratives led by Black women, only to turn around and embrace those same narratives when white women are at the forefront.
One of the most empowering moments of her commentary came as she began to dismiss and debunk the idea that Black women are responsible or to blame for negative stigmas that have plagued Black communities for decades. Speaking specifically about the double standard applied to how America regards single Black mothers versus single White mothers, Cooper made a bold declaration that had the audience fired up for the remainder of the discussion.
