Our forever FLOTUS Michelle Obama stopped by Klick Health’s MUSE New York event Tuesday evening to discuss science, art, and technology. During the conversation with the company’s founder and CEO, Leerom Segal, Mrs. Obama explained how she uses social media and how a certain chief executive might want to use it, too.
Despite having over 10 million followers on Twitter, the former first lady admitted she’s still wrapping her head around the platform.
“I still haven’t figured it out because I’m old and I don’t understand most of social media,” she joked. “I tweet, but I have a committee,” Obama continued. “I don’t just tweet off the top of my head, which I don’t encourage people to do — especially kids.”
Though she went on to focus her social media advice on “kids,” we think Mrs. Obama’s advice would be helpful to a certain White House occupant whose Twitter fingers are constantly making news.
“How many kids do you know that the first thing that comes off the top of their head is the first thing they should express?” Mrs. Obama asked. “It’s like, take a minute. Talk to your crew before you put that [out there] and then spell check and check the grammar.”
Since moving into the White House many have wondered if Trump would tone down his fiery tweets. Instead, he’s continued to spread false news, reshare information from white supremacists, and use his platform to attack those who don’t agree with him.
While his supporters praise Trump for “telling it like it is,” Mrs. Obama told the crowd that’s not always the best strategy.
“I think kids do think telling it like it is and talking off the top of your head [is cool]… [but] that’s never been good,” she said. “We weren’t raised like that. That’s rude.”
So how does Mrs. Obama use social media? It’s simple. “I use social media,” she said. “But I use it like a grown-up.”
If only Trump would do the same.
