An Indiana teenager and her mother have the internet buzzing after recreating a photo of the newly graduated student’s first day of kindergarten.
Gabrielle Yowell, an 18-year-old from New Albany, Indiana, paired the photos on social media saying, “First day of kindergarten to graduation and my mom is still as proud as ever.”
The graduate told Buzzfeed News that while she and her mother “are very close,” the celebration was especially cherished as her mother was battling breast cancer a few years ago.
“She fought through it and was able to see me graduate,” Gabrielle said.
The original photo, which was taken by a The News & Tribune photographer back in 2004, was a depiction of the mother-daughter duo’s excitement after her first day of kindergarten.
The girl’s mother, Angela Jacobi told reporters a few years ago that “it is very important that you are confident of your child being at that school and in that environment.”
Shortly after the side-by-side photo was shared, many people took to social media to congratulate the graduate and express their thoughts on the powerful moment.
I'm just impressed she can bare the weight of that hug in those heels. Queens raising queens 💕
While Gabrielle said that she plans to to attend Indiana State University in the fall to study biology, people are already requesting that the two continue this photo series as one Twitter user wrote, “Pls don’t forget to do this again after you graduate from college.”
Recreating old family photos during special moments like graduation is something that is starting to become increasingly common. In fact, earlier this week, California graduate Madeleine Tarin shared a photo on social media alongside an older photo of her and her family members.
