It looks like Tidal is moving beyond just music on its digital platform.
Last night during the NBA Finals game, the Jay Z-led music streaming service teased a trailer for the upcoming 4:44 film starring Academy Award-winning actor Mahershala Ali.
Ali appears in the trailer as a boxer, and it appears that Danny Glover is playing his trainer. According to the credits, Lupita Nyong’o will also star in it and Tidal is partnering with Sprint on the film.
According to Forbes, it was announced that Jay Z sold one-third of Tidal to Sprint for $200 million and it appears this is the first of many partnerships to come out of the deal.
Tidal isn’t the first subscription-based digital platform to get into the original programming game. Netflix obviously is the king, but Hulu, Amazon and most recently Apple Music and YouTube are also allowing users to stream movies, TV shows and more.
Ali, who recently won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Moonlight, also appeared in the critically acclaimed Hidden Figures film last year. With roles on Netflix’s Luke Cage and House of Cards, Ali is becoming one of the most sought out actors in Hollywood.
We’re looking forward to this upcoming film and will stay tuned for a release date.
